“Most Outstanding Project Involving Youth”
Recently, our vegetable garden project was given the Special Award for “Most Outstanding Project Involving Youth” by the South Atlantic Region of National Garden Clubs (NC, SC, VA, West VA, Kentucky).
The award was for DCI’s Community Gardening project funded by Town and Country Garden Club. We also partnered with Seeds to Supper (a program within Inter-Faith Food Shuttle).
They were amazingly helpful by providing volunteers and expertise. The grant funded a 6-week home vegetable gardening workshop for five families, who then all received a 4X8 garden box filled with soil as well as plants and tools. It also funded three garden boxes for DCI’s building and supplies to sustain them; six community gardening workshops at our Summer Lunch program; and field trips and gardening/nutrition enrichment activities for student programs like YLC and STEAM.
We also hosted exciting volunteer days with Duke Alumni Association to build, distribute, and fill the garden boxes.
