Together We Thrive at DCI 💜

Durham Children’s Initiative

A unifying force a more equitable future.

Greetings DCI Friends!,

DCI began its new fiscal year in July and with that new year came new programs, new team members, and new board members. It was an opportunity to start afresh and build on the amazing things of the prior year. As Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “With the new day comes new strength and new thoughts.”  This resonates with me because it allows the DCI team, families, and friends to embrace wonderful changes.

Change #1:

DCI is pleased to welcome four great community leaders to our Board of Directors. Garland Goins, Kristy Marshall, Alesia Perry, and Asmae Qarouach all agreed to a servant leadership role with the board. These four new board members bring a diversity of experiences from HR to finance to communications to technology and they bring a diversity of thought. We are pleased to welcome their thought leadership and partnership.

Change #2:

DCI is also pleased to welcome several new team members (read further in the newsletter to learn more about each team). First, we are establishing our Parent Alliance Team with Brittany Beal and Kaitlyn Thompson. Our Youth Alliance Team welcomed Courtney Ingram and Moriah Williams. Finally, we hired a Special Projects Director, Daiba Tozay, to spearhead special initiatives. Adding these great team members to an already powerhouse team, DCI is ready to continue our great work.

Change #3:

After successfully piloting the Learn-to-Earn program last school year, DCI is moving forward with the next stage in our program launches. Up next, we have DCI Days Out, where family fun meets community building, the exciting relaunch of Durham Kids Saves after its pandemic hiatus, and Club Climb, where we celebrate smart goals within the family! These programs will allow us to continue to build on partnerships with collaborating organizations, grow the interconnectivity of the DCI community and strengthen the relationships among DCI staff and families.

While I only listed a few things, there is a lot of movement happening at DCI. As things continue to grow, I try to remember this quote from Arthur Ashe, the great tennis player and humanitarian who once said, “Start where you are.  Use what you have. Do what you can.”  This is exactly what we strive to do each day at DCI!
